Sewage treatment, or domestic wastewater treatment, is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff (effluents) and domestic. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce an environmentally-safe fluid waste stream (or treated effluent) and a solid waste (or treated sludge) suitable for disposal or reuse (usually as farm fertilizer).

Most industries produce some wet waste although recent trends in the developed world have been to minimise such production or recycle such waste within the production process. However, many industries remain dependent on processes that produce wastewaters.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a water treatment process that clarifies wastewaters (or other waters) by the removal of suspended matter such as oil or solids. The removal is achieved by dissolving air in the water or wastewater under pressure and then releasing the air at atmospheric pressure in a flotation tank or basin. The released air forms tiny bubbles which adhere to the suspended matter causing the suspended matter to float to the surface of the water where it may then be removed by a skimming device.

Sequencing batch reactors (SBR) or sequential batch reactors are industrial processing tanks for the treatment of wastewater. SBR reactors treat waste water such as sewage or output from anaerobic digesters or mechanical biological treatment facilities in batches. Oxygen is bubbled through the waste water to reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) to make suitable for discharge into sewers or for use on land.

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is the combination of a membrane process like microfiltration or ultrafiltration with a suspended growth bioreactor, and is now widely used for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plant.

The Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) process utilise the attached bio-film and provides smaller footprint solution for carbonaceous, nitrification, C+N or in anoxic mode for de-nitrification treatment with lower capital and operating costs.

The Electro coagulation process is based on valid scientific principles involving responses of water contaminants to strong electric fields and electrically induced oxidation and reduction reactions. This process is able to take out over 99 percent of some heavy metal cations and also appears to be able to electrocute microorganisms in the water. It is also able to precipitate charged colloids and remove significant amounts of other ions, colour, colloids, and emulsions.

SAFF or Submerged Aerobic Fixed Film reactor as the name suggests is a high rate attached growth aerobic treatment system wherein the bacterial growth takes place on a media submerged in wastewater. SAFF is the upgradation/ modification of the conventional activated sludge process. SAFF incorporates the advantages of fixed film technologies and combines with them the fine bubble diffused aeration techniques, to get highly efficient biological treatment unit.

Filter presses generally work in a "batch" manner. The plates are clamped together, then a pump starts feeding the slurry into the filter press to complete a filtering cycle and produce a batch of solid filtered material, called the filter cake. The stack of plates is opened, solid is removed, and the stack of plates is re-clamped and the filtering cycle is repeated. A filter press uses increased pump pressure to maximize the rate of filtration and produce a final filter cake with a water content under 65%.

A centrifuge is a piece of equipment, generally driven by an electric motor (some older models were spun by hand), that puts an object in rotation around a fixed axis, applying a force perpendicular to the axis. The centrifuge works using the sedimentation principle, where the centripetal acceleration causes denser substances to separate out along the radial direction (the bottom of the tube). By the same token, lighter objects will tend to move to the top (of the tube; in the rotating picture, move to the centre).

Fine bubble diffusers are a pollution control technology used to aerate wastewater for sewage treatment. They produce a plethora of very small air bubbles which rise slowly from the floor of a wastewater treatment plant or sewage treatment plant aeration tank and provide substantial and efficient mass transfer of oxygen to the water.

This technology is generally deployed for the removal of suspended impurities and also for odour and light colour to provide limited polishing to water and wastewater. Mainly Sand, anthracite and activated carbon is used as media under pressure or gravity. Water or wastewater is passed through the bed in order to remove these impurities from the water. Basic filtration takes place by means of sieving, adhesion etc.
